Compensation: $16-$18 per hour

Reports to: EPIC Arts Clay Studio Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW

The EPIC Arts Clay Studio Pottery Instructor is responsible for planning and delivering engaging  pottery classes, workshops, and activities to students with diverse skill levels. Working in alignment with established Clay Studio protocols and practices, the Pottery Instructor will guide students of all ages through the artistic and technical processes through various techniques, skills and instruction. This position aims to enhance community engagement and involvement in the arts, while ensuring accessibility and inclusivity of Wyandotte County residents and stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•Plan and submit ceramic classes to the EPIC Arts Clay Studio Manager by deadlines. This includes providing details such as date, time, description, course content, required materials, etc.

 Deliver an agreed minimum number of classes per month, with a specific focus on engaging Wyandotte County youth and families.

 Offer themed classes that expand beyond routine EPIC Clay offerings to enrich the community experience.

 Adhere to Clay Studio procedures for class preparation and clean-up, including tasks such as organizing tools and equipment, portioning materials, and maintaining studio cleanliness.

 Assisting with processing students’ work including but not limited to trimming, glazing, and packaging for pick-up, ensuring a seamless experience for participants.

 Participate in Clay Studio planning meetings with the EPIC Clay Team for class scheduling, studio updates, and other pertinent discussions.

 Attend staff meetings and trainings at the Build WyCo office (2 S 14 St, Kansas City Kansas), and 1-on-1 meetings with EPIC Clay Studio Manager as scheduled.

• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Preferred experience teaching ceramics to diverse groups (children, families, adults).

 Proficiency in ceramic techniques: hand-building, wheel-throwing, glazing, firing.

 Studio operations experience: organizing materials, equipment handling, safety.

 Knowledge of kiln operation.

 Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

 Creative lesson planning ability.

 Organizational skills for class planning and studio management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The following physical demands and work environment characteristics represent the expectations for

• Work is primarily conducted in a temperature-controlled clay studio with natural and artificial light. Summer art camps and art walks may involve exposure to hot and humid outdoor environments.

 Regularly exposed to dust, environmental chemicals, fumes, or fragrances, along with specialized ceramic products.

 Requires the ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) and perform administrative tasks, including training and customer service.

 Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., such as recycled clay, and reach overhead to store or access materials. Tasks also involve bending, reaching, and loading/unloading kilns.

 Work safely with ceramic equipment, including kilns and pug mills.
